If you’ve been to the cardio section of a fitness facility within the past few years, chances are you’ve seen or worked out on a cross trainer. A favorite of many, these machines have been steadily growing in popularity over the years, and have gained a following of devoted exercisers.

What exactly is a cross trainer, what benefits can a high-quality one offer you, and how effective of a workout does it provide?

What’s a cross trainer?

Cross trainers are uniquely designed to combine the movements of a treadmill, bike, and stair stepper into one machine that moves in an ellipse-shaped pattern. Similar to running, the cross trainer allows for a smooth and natural gliding motion.

How can a cross trainer help me?

  • Train the whole body – Unlike other machines that only target one part of the body, the cross trainer is an ideal machine for getting a full-body workout. Moving handlebars, available on most Precor cross trainers, allow you to work your shoulders, back, chest, and arms simultaneously while exercising your legs. This means you have options when you use a cross trainer – choose to work your upper and lower body, or focus on specific lower-body muscle groups.
  • Customise settings to meet your goals – Customisable settings on cross trainers allow you to increase resistance to a level that truly tests and builds your muscles. Precor cross trainers are the only kind to offer a distinct incline setting that strengthens, tones, and works your legs. Because of this, you can use Precor cross trainers as a method to strength train, or simply to get an aerobic workout in.
  • Low-impact is easy on joints – The smooth, suspended motion of the cross trainer ensures that the impact on your joints is nowhere near the strong impact experienced when running. Cross trainers are ideal for those who suffer from painful joint problems or exercisers who are recovering from injury.

How effective is it?

More intense than other cardio machines like treadmills and stationary bikes, cross trainers deliver a highly effective workout that really gets your heart racing. The ability to change the intensity and speed of the workout means that the exerciser is in control, and can get as much from the workout as he or she desires.

Whether your goal is to tone certain areas of your body or burn off a specific number of calories, the cross trainer will help you get there. For example, someone who weighs about 68 kilos can burn up to 400 calories in 30 minutes of working out on a cross trainer.

So, next time you’re able to, hop on a cross trainer and experience how the low-impact, smooth machine can help you achieve your fitness goals.

What Is the Difference Between Cross-Trainer And Running Sneakers?

Keeping your feet in good shape and protecting your joints ensures you can continue with your workouts.

Selecting the right shoe for the type of workout in which you’re engaged is a critical part of your training preparation.

Two types of shoes, cross-trainers and running shoes, share some similarities, but their differences mean you must select the right shoe for your activity.

What Each Supports

Cross-trainers are designed to play multiple roles. You can use them in the gym for almost any activity — lifting weights, your yoga class, using the elliptical machine, stretching, basketball or a Zumba workout.

Running shoes, on the other hand, are specifically designed for people who pound the pavement, the track or the trail. While cross-training shoes provide cushioning, running shoes go much further in protecting your feet from impact with the ground. Regular runners shouldn’t use cross-country shoes.

They simply don’t provide enough cushioning and support, whether you are running outside or inside on a treadmill. Using a cross-trainer for running leaves you susceptible to foot, knee and back injuries.

How They Feel On Your Feet

Running shoes, as you might guess, are lighter than cross-trainers. This lack of weight makes it easier to run, especially when you are piling up the miles.

If you walk regularly, use a running shoe for that purpose as well. The heavier weight of the cross-trainer provides extra durability and control to support lateral movements.

Differences To Look For

The sole of a cross-trainer is wide and stable, often expanding beyond the width of the upper port of the shoe. This width provides more support for lateral movement that you engage in with these shoes.

Runners rarely make the sharp cuts and lateral movements that are standard on the basketball court or a dance class, for example. In addition, the tread on running shoes is smooth, which provides less traction, but because runners are essentially moving straight ahead, traction is rarely an issue.

Finding The Right Shoe

Runners in particular require shoes that can be fitted for the particular shape of their foot. Models of running shoes are designed for people who overpronate, rolling their feet inward when they stride, or underpronators who generally have flat feet.

You don’t want to run hundreds of miles in shoes that don’t cradle your feet properly. Try any shoe on before buying, and, if you’re running long distances, have an expert fit you to the right shoe after observing your movement.

Athletic Tim Woodier is riding across America on a machine that’s half-bike, half-cross trainer

Travelling 5,000 miles across another country is a challenge at the best of times.

But superfit Tim Woodier is making it more difficult by spending three months journeying across the United States using a bizarre contraption that’s half-bike and half-cross trainer.

The photographer stumbled across the invention – called an ElliptiGO – after he injured his foot running.

Any worries, then?

“I’ve loads of concerns about this trip,” the 35-year-old said.

“The main one is I am going away for three months and not going to be earning any money.”

Why is he doing it?

The dad-of-two is planning to publish his adventure, which begins in June, as a book.

“I have never written a book and never done anything like this before,” he said.

“I’m not scared of a bear attacking me or gun-toting Americans or traffic even.

“That kind of stuff is not a worry. But this is going to be a massive change.”

If Tim completes the trip he will set a world record for the longest distance travelled on an ElliptiGO.

He hasn’t yet convinced himself he’s not making a “massive mistake” but added: “It’s happening.”

A drastic way to become a writer…

The book was initially just going to be a photo book.

“But I enjoy writing as well,” he said.

“I’ve written reports on ultra-marathons and I like doing that.

“I really just want to write a book and become a writer.

“It is a pretty drastic way to go about it.”

It’s a win-win

If things go badly there could be an upside.

“The worse it goes the better a book is going to be,” Tim said.

“I can’t lose in a way. I’m confident but I’m having doubts at the same time.”

Where will he stay along the way?

Tim will be staying with 25 Americans en route.

“They did not take much persuasion,” he said.

“There was just one Facebook post at the start outlining my plans for the trip which at that point was just asking people to volunteer to help.

“I did not put a route because I did not expect it to be in a straight line.”

What route is he taking?

He had planned to go from east to west.

Now this trip will just take in a route in the American east.

“From just one Facebook post I had about 30 or 40 responses and I refined the trip,” he said.

“They were all enthusiastic about it and they said ‘Of course you can come and stay’.”

One even offered to lend him her ElliptiGO.

“The idea is to get this published then go for another trip in the centre of America an another in the West,” Tim, from Abergavenny, said.

How long will it take?

The working title of the book is Go, Go, Go.

“I’ll stay with each person for a full day and a night,” Tim said.

“Then the next day will be a full day travelling and so on.

“The whole trip, in its entirety, should take about three months.”

The idea was spawned about 10 years ago but back then it was just for a huge road trip.

“I had this idea before we had children and my wife agreed we could do it when we had children,” Tim said.

“But I had no idea what an ElliptiGO was until eight months ago.

“My wife has kind of known it was going to happen at some point.

“She is very supportive and sorting things out as we speak.”

What will he miss the most?

He said he was going to miss his kids.

“Hopefully it will inspire my children,” he said.

“My four-year-old does not get it but the six-year-old does and she will miss me, which tugs the heart strings, but in the long term it cannot be a bad thing.

“I’ll be taking a little GoPro camera along to film a few bits and bobs on as well.

“I’ll be uploading that to Facebook and maybe doing a little YouTube blog too.”

As part of his training he recently rode 600km from Chepstow to Menai Bridge and back.

“On that trip there were times where I was thinking ‘I will never ride this kind of distance again’ but you soon get over that,” Tim said.
